Brook Cheuvront, a 20-year-old University of North Carolina student, was tragically found dead after disappearing during a solo hike on Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. She had been interning at the University of Cape Town when her friends lost contact with her. Her body was recovered by search teams after a day-long effort involving rangers, search and rescue, and aircraft support. Cheuvront was a Morehead-Cain scholar and valedictorian of Avery County High School. Authorities emphasized the importance of group hiking for safety in the area.
